Background on Health Services in Papua New Guinea for Tourists and Visitors

Papua New Guinea's health system is a mix of public and private health services, offering varying levels of care across the country. The public health system is structured through provincial health authorities, with major referral and general hospitals located in each of the 20 provinces. The standard of care can vary significantly—from relatively good services in major centers like Port Moresby General Hospital to resource-limited facilities in more remote or rural provinces.
In addition to public hospitals, private health care services are available, mostly concentrated in urban centers such as Port Moresby, Lae, Rabaul, and Mount Hagen. These include private hospitals, medical centers, and general practice clinics, which range widely in quality. While some provide excellent care, others may be less reliable, so it’s important for visitors to choose facilities wisely.
Most clinics and hospitals are equipped to manage common health issues, including infections, minor injuries, and chronic conditions. However, specialist care and emergency services may be limited outside the main cities. Health professionals in PNG come from diverse backgrounds—some have trained and worked primarily within the country, while others have international experience, particularly in Australia and New Zealand.
At Niugini Medical Services, we pride ourselves on having staff with extensive experience both locally and overseas, including in major Australian hospitals and rural Australian health services. This enables us to provide care that is not only responsive to local conditions but also aligned with the expectations and medical standards familiar to international visitors, especially those from Australia and other developed countries.

  • Malaria is a major concern—leading cause of illness, with confirmed deaths in PNG

  • Simple use of mosquito nets (at night), repellents and eating hot food, washing hands before eating will go a long way in making your stay healthy and happy.

  • Tuberculosis and lower respiratory infections remain among top causes of illness and mortality. Sue mask if you are travelling on public bus system.

  • About 1% of population liver with HIV/AIDS and is widespread epidemic, particularly in urban and rural areas and provinces where mining, fishery and forestry and LNG extraction industries are high.

  • Malaria is present in many parts of Papua New Guinea, especially in lowland coastal areas and rural provinces. As a visitor, it is strongly recommended that you take malaria prevention measures, including prophylactic (preventive) medication, insect precautions, and awareness of early symptoms.

  • Recommended Malaria Prophylaxis Options:
Before arriving in PNG, consult your doctor or travel medicine clinic for a prescription. Common antimalarial medications include:

    • Mefloquine (Lariam) – once-weekly option, but may have side effects in some people.
    • Fansidar-isn't recommended for prophylaxis use by visitors as there is a lot of resistance in PNG

  • The choice depends on your health, travel itinerary, and length of stay. These are locally available but better to bring supplies for few weeks yourself as in some cases supplies may run out easily.

  • Additional Prevention Tips:
    • Use mosquito repellent containing DEET.
    • Wear long-sleeved clothing, especially in the evenings.
    • Sleep under a mosquito net or in screened/accommodated rooms.
